Who Are The Muslim Brotherhood?

Remember as you watch the clip that the CNN anchor is interviewing a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. So it’s not as though the anchor is trying to give some “fair and balanced” counterargument in some adversarial interview. Not that that would excuse this even then:
“I’m asking about the Muslim Brotherhood, the organization that has tirelessly, and in many cases quite courageously, campaigned in elections, it has campaigned against the government, it has campaigned on behalf of the poor in Egypt. It has a long, long history in that country. What role should it have now?” If the Muslim Brotherhood take over any country in the Middle East,EU and North Africa the world will be in trouble. There are Muslims pushing for unity against the "Little Satan and Big Satan". When the people of Egypt and all the other countries under unrest get tired of fighting their govertment they may join together to blame Israel and America.  So when people are saying that Americas enemies are the honorable ones we must question their patriotism. If you have any information on the Muslim Brotherhood please comment on them. If you support the Muslim Brotherhood please tell us why?

Transcript of FAREED ZAKARIA GPS via CNN:
ZAKARIA: Mohamed, one of the visions that haunts Americans is of the Iranian revolution, where a dictator, pro-American dictator, was replaced by an even worse regime that was even more anti-American and more threatening to the region.  People worry about the Muslim Brotherhood.  Are you confident that a post-Mubarak Egypt will not give rise to some kind of Islamic fundamentalist force that will undermine the democracy of Egypt?
ELBARADEI: I’m quite confident of that, Fareed.  This is a myth that was sold by the Mubarak regime, that it’s either us, the ruthless dictators, or above (ph) them the al Qaida types.
You know, the Muslim Brotherhood has nothing to do with the Iranian model, has nothing to do with extremism, as we have seen it in Afghanistan and other places.  The Muslim Brotherhood is a religiously conservative group.  They are a minority in Egypt.  They are not a majority of the Egyptian people, but they have a lot of credibility because all the other liberal parties have been smothered for 30 years.
They are in favor of a federalist (ph) state.  They are in favor of a wording on the base of constitution that has red lines (ph) that every Egyptian has the same rights, same obligation, that the state in no way will be a state based on religion.  And I have been reaching out to them.  We need to include them.  They are part of the Egyptian society, as much as the Marxist party here.  I think this myth that has been perpetuated and sold by the regime has no – has no iota of reality.
As you know, Fareed, I’ve worked with Iranians, I’ve worked here.  There is 100 percent difference between the two societies.
ZAKARIA: If there were a democratic government with Muslim Brotherhood participation, do you believe that Egypt would still be at peace with Israel?
ELBARADEI: Of course.  I mean, I – again, the whole issue of peace in the Middle East is an issue which everybody – nobody wants to go to war, Fareed.

  1. Chris, ultimately history decides if one man's freedom fighter is another's terrorist. If in 40 years the world is one big Islamic sharia run government then they will be freedom fighters, if not then they will be terrorists.

I'm not at all happy with the thought of the Muslim Brotherhood taking over Egypt, but it is their country not ours. What i feel is good and right for me shouldn't interfere with their sovereignty.

  2. "What i feel is good and right for me shouldn't interfere with their sovereignty"

    Thats right, screw other people?

But in your quote you forget that that sentiment does not hold true for the likes of the "brotherhood" for they believe what is good and right for them should be IMPOSED on us thus denying our sovereignty.

  3. I dont beleive Democracy and Islam Religon can exsist in the same Governemnt. Democracy is Governed by Laws,Islam form of Government is Ruled by Religion.

I do beleive Citizens of any Nation have the right to choose their way of Governing but like IRAN that MAY be what Citizens want but the "Brother Hood" aint going to let that happen!

I beleive OUR best posture on the Events Occurring in Egypt are how does this Event effect OUR Security. The main reason at least four Presidents backed Mubark a Dictator rightly/wrongly he did provide stability to a point in the Middle East. I just beleive Egypt will become another IRAN and to be honest aint much we can do about it. WE will just add another Regime that wants to destroy OUR Nation to the growing list. Down the road there will be a confrontation between the Two cultures its just unavoidable to me!

  5. Rep. Levin Introduces Bill to Expand Electric Vehicle Tax Credit

With gas prices on the rise again, policymakers are looking for ways to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign sources of oil. Last year, the U.S. imported over 60 percent of the oil we used. In his State of the Union message last week, President Obama set the goal of having 1 million electric vehicles on America’s roads by 2015. Vehicle manufacturers are now producing extended-range electric vehicles, like the Chevy Volt, but the vehicles are costly, in part, because so far relatively few of these new vehicles (and the batteries that power them) have been built and sold.

Last week, Rep. Levin introduced legislation [H.R. 500] to extend the existing $7500 electric vehicle tax credit to the first 500,000 electric vehicles produced by each manufacturer. As Rep. Levin noted, “Raising the cap on this credit will help carmakers reach the demand and production scale necessary for long-term viability.” For more information, click here.

Rep. Levin Opposes Plan by House Leaders to Privatize Medicare

House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling indicated last week that he hopes the House of Representatives will vote later this year to adopt a plan to convert the current Medicare system into a private voucher system. Under this plan, which was developed by Budget Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, rather than receiving health care through Medicare, seniors would instead get a voucher to buy private insurance. The voucher plan is controversial because the value of the health vouchers would not keep up with the growth in medical inflation, so seniors and their families would have to make up any shortfall. Rep. Levin opposes this plan.

Three Million Seniors Received Prescription Drug Relief Checks in 2010

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced that more than 3 million Medicare beneficiaries nationwide received $250 rebate checks last year to help pay for prescription drugs. Under the Affordable Care Act approved by Congress 10 months ago, seniors whose prescription drug costs were so high that they fell into the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap, commonly known as the “donut hole,” received this one-time tax-free $250 rebate check.

Under the new health care reform law, Medicare beneficiaries falling into the donut hole in 2011 will be eligible for 50% discounts on covered brand-name prescription drugs. The “donut hole” will be completely closed by 2020. For more information, click here.

Lawmakers Introduce Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act

More than 100 member of the House of Representatives, including Rep. Levin, recently introduced legislation [H.R. 111] to help ensure that breast cancer patients receive adequate support after breast cancer surgery. Some women find themselves forced by their insurance companies to leave the hospital before they are ready, sometimes just hours after surgery. The legislation would give patients and their doctors more control over treatment decisions by, among other things, guaranteeing a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours for a woman having a mastectomy or lumpectomy.

    This Week in Congress

The House of Representatives is not in session this week. Rep. Levin is working out of his office in Roseville, Michigan. The House will reconvene on February 8. Feel free to call the office in Roseville.

  6. Christopher said it best. The Muslim Brotherhood makes up from 7-20% of Egypt. That is a fringe group. But like in this country the fringe can do a lot of damage to a country when the people are afraid or desparet enough to listen to them. It seems that every Muslim group and socialist group is trying to take the power from the people for themselves. When hunger stricks the people they will look to the socialist to bail them out. The socialist will not be able to deliver on their promise to feed everyone and make things better. And that is when the Muslims will step in. The pendulum will swing far to the left and then back to the far right fundamentalists. I'm afraid of both the far left socialist and the far right Muslim fundamentalists. And a constitutional government of the people and by the people isn't even trying. Democracy or Republic doesn't boad well with the Muslim religion. Israel is ramping up for WWIII, for good reason. They may be all alone if anything happens under this admin. God help them and us. If Israel falls we will be next. It's their religion. Look at the common denominator in all these uprisings around the world. Islam.

  7. CP, what would you have us do? Impose our hegemony on them because they might in the future? Haven't we done that? And has that limited the expansion of Islam? Even better, has it limited the expansion of radical Islam?

I don't have a solution for the problem.

Restrict them, they gather power. Let them go and they gather power. Tell me what you would do?

  8. At this point I would say we can do nothing that will affect the out come in Egypt.

Jordon will be next and then we will have alot of hard descisions to make. Isreal will be a TARGET and very soon if things keep occurring at there present pace.

Isreal against the Middle East. Isreal will not go quitely and WE will see what OUR politcans do. I suspect at this point NOT much. Few words of DONT DO That and then another Arab/Isreal war will begin. Isreal will not Go easly if at all. We must either assist Isreal or just get out of the Middle East cause we cannot do both. We in time will be a island ourselves with ONLY us to defend OURSELVES. Maybe not right away but it will occurr no matter what POLITICAL solutions we think we can make. We will be the TARGET and the Terrorist will be the HUNTERS. You cannot fight Terrorism with just words just cant!
