What Would The Left Wing Progressives Say About The Post Office Bankruptcy

Picture of Post Office - Free Pictures - FreeFoto.comThe reason the government run postal service isn't working is because of UPS and the other private sector mail services. While the UPS's get to pick and choose their customers the government post offices don't get that choice. Well how would the Progressives fix this problem of compatition in the field of mail? The government must have some social and economic justice. They need to tax the UPS's in this country or take them over like they want to do with the health insurance industry. The government  can't compeat with the private sector so they must take it over. The US postal service is too big to fail, And all those government employees can't be out of work because the government can't compeat with the private sector. The only long term selution to the postal service going bankrupt is to make email harder to to or tax it. Tax the private sector mail services so that it is more expensive to use them thus saving government union jobs. Or the government can just nationalize all email and mail service. A one payer system for all mail services. The postal service can't keep raising it's rates because that is what got them into this problem in the first place. And in the eyes of the Progressives the postal SERVICE isn't to serve the customers. It's there to serve the unions now. And you don't want to tell those unions that they have bleed their host(taxpayers) dry. We must get the workers of the world to unite in all facets of the economy. That is the only way to make sure that we have a social justice and a social economy. An economy dictated by the workers(unions) and the government.  Now I know a lot of you right wing conservatives will point out the fact that this has never worked before. But that is because they didn't know all that we know. We can make John Lennons song Imagine a reality.
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Well my Progressive friends, I say if you want that kind of utopia then you need to lead us. Show us how it works one person at a time. Start with the man in the mirror. If you want social justice and economic justice then start by giving away all YOUR excesses. Lead by example not by big government. Show us "stupid conservatives" how it is done. When you live the life you want us all to live then maybe we will follow. Put your theories to use in your own home first and then we might follow.                                                                                                                                                   And is there one example you progressives can give were the government has lowered cost or done a better job then the private sector? Education, waste removal, postal service,medacare,SSI... You must be able to have one in all the history of the world that proves your theory that government is better. And before you go off and say that I'm for no government or anarchy don';t go there. I'm for LIMITED government. I'm for what our founding fathers were for. Just like I know that most liberals aren't for total governemnt take overs. But what on earth makes you think that left of center is better then right of center? What do you base your theories on? I base mine on 234 years of American capitalist history. It's not a perfect system but it's the best we have. When you on the left have  proof that your theory of social justice working let us know. Just because you thought of it and it sounds good doesn't mean it will or ever has worked. The experament has been tryed many times in world history and it has failed every time. I'm not willing to let you try it again with the greatest richest country that has ever existed.

  1. its obvious that Email, not Ups and FedEx is slowly draining the revenue stream of the Post Office.

Add in online bill pay and i haven't sent much mail in years.

  2. Do What Ever it Takes to Make it COST Effective!
Shorter Hours, Less Staff, Less Delievery Days! Sorta Like Private Sector Does When Theres a CASH Flow Problem. Only Difference Is That CASH Flow Problem at The Post Office is TAX PAYERS Money!

  3. Chris - a thorough response to your post would take at least an essay of several pages. I don't think you or your readers have the patience for that. But allow me to touch lightly on a couple points.

Isn't is ironic that you reference the Post Office and our founding fathers in the same post. Did you know that Ben Franklin had established the Post Office even before we had a country? Did you know that the subsidy the Post Office has given to basically the print media (started off with newspapers, but expanded over the centuries)had to do with ensuring the freedom of the Press? Did you know that the "monopoly" you seem to disdain was originally intended to give cover and protection of law to the sanctity of communications and to protect universal service - nationwide? Did you know that unlike the private delivery companies like Fed X & UPS, the Post Office is required by law to provide delivery of that mail everywhere in the country- no matter how remote or hard to get to?

I do not understand the animosity you seem to have for unions. But it wasn't even until 1970 that there were bonafide unions in the Post Office - until then it was trade associations with no power to bargain. I know that UPS has a union - don't know about Fed X. But unions are hardly the cause of the problems in the Postal Service. Its problem is electronic communications and a big recession. As an aside, many businesses are feeling the pinch also - in case you didn't know. For example, I heard that our big media conglomerates like Time-Warner, Viacom, etc have had a severe decrease in ad revenues. In fact if you recall, there were news stories about the dearth of big bucks for the Super Bowl ads - with some companies dropping out. You singling out the PO for criticism as a government entity is disingenuous - they are just a susceptible to the economy as private enterprise.

Capitalism is an economic system. It is not a political system. I fear you think it is. Capitalism has one goal - profit. Not a dirty word in my book. But greed and avarice is. It is the political system that must keep the capitalism in check. Otherwise, that greed and avarice will subjugate the citizen - and destroy our democracy.

You can quit having big government when you quit having big business. Trans national corporations have no allegience to our or anyones country. They have no sense of corporate citizenship. They have no sense of morality. And now it looks like our supreme Court has given them 'carte blanche' to take over our country.

  4. I agree on your point Joey (OMG! LOL)

But with that point, you have to look at how Congress prevents the Post Office from being competitive. And yes, unions as well. Let's face it, if the Post Office cannot adjust swiftly to changes, nee if they cannot even adjust PERIOD to changing times, they are S.O.L.

I love my post office, and the folks that work there are always great whenever I go in. But I was reading an article the other day about how Congress won't let them close any offices. Which, I understand, no Congressperson would like to close the Post Office(s) in their District. But if you are keeping a P.O. open just because, well, that's some pretty big issue. I'll see if I can find the article again. I believe it said there are more P.O.'s than all the McDonalds, Burger Kings and Taco Bells combined? Yet they average only, I think it was 600 visits/week. I'll see if I can find it, my numbers might be off.

  5. vomamike the post office is becoming obsolite like JoeC and John said. So should we bail out the post office Mike? Or should we reorganize it to fit with the times? Or should the private sector pick up the tab so that the post office doesn't have to reorganize and shrink? And Mike isn't the unions that are making it imposable for the Postal service to get to a managable size and reorganize? I'm not saying that the Post office doesn't have a use. You like to got to the extreems to try and prove a point. I said that I'm for LIMITED government not ANARCHY. Do you remember that part? Mike the market will determine the value of a Superbowl ad not the government. The market will determine what medias we like and dislike. Not big government. Like I said if you want something then lead by example. You Progressives need to start putting your money where your mouths are and pay for what you want to save. If you don't like greed then don't buy it. Who is forcing us to buy a companies product Mike? Is Google making us use them? Is AT&T Or Shell Gas? Big Governement can make us do things but Big Business can't. So stop playing that card as it isn't even in the deck. If you hate greed and big profits then protest and stop buying them. But making bigger government in hopes of making more freedom is rediculous and has never been done. Mike why would a union supproter dislike big business when most union members are making their living from big business? That doesn't make sense. And why are you supporting the same governemnt that has proped up the biggest businesses because they are too big to fail? If you haven't notices it is the big business that has been socialized and the poor. The middle class is having to deal with the down turn in the Capitalist cycle. Not an political but an economic cycle. I know the differance do you? I do appreciate you opinion and I do value it Mike. You make some great points that most people don't think of.

  6. Chris, nice blog too! Keep on turning the liberals ("progressives," actually, I would call em "statists.") crazy. Amen!

  7. Jeremiah Legacy03 March, 2010 11:32

It funny you should mention this - there have been attempts by the "progressives" to tax e-mails for this very reason: to subsidize the Post Office and encourage people to use it instead of the more convenient e-mail system.

    And they are still trying.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Should we have bailed out the horse and buggie industry? Coal furnace industry? They used to be too big to fail.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The government is the one that doesn't play fair. They will tax a compeating business to subsadize themselves when they have become too big to succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have to say Chris, you hit the nail on the head. Regressives would still be subsidizing the telegraph companies today if they had the chance. Especially if the telegraph companies were unionized (just think of all those wonderful votes that could have been bought!)

The only reason corporations lobby is because they want to buy legislators who, through the years and thanks to regressive policies, have gained control over the private sector. Large corporations lobby to convince lawmakers to pass laws that will put them at an advantage, and destroy competition. Until we remove the power from the feds, we will have corporate influence. So vomamike, I would have to argue that the problem isn't Capitalism, which allows the consumer to choose the winners and losers, based on the product, service, quality, price, etc. The problem is Corporatism and the tendrils of power that the Federal government has grown.

As Chris said, no corporation has the power to make me buy anything they sell. Suddenly the government does? That's downright creepy. I assume you approve of it vomamike? Conceding the power to the Federal Government to make us buy something, against our will, for our "own good"? Who determines what is for our own good? I am more than capable of doing that myself. But now Washington, with the help of lobbyists, is going to decide that?

As for the Supreme Court decision, I'm sure you read all the rabid hype that FAILk has, but the fact is not striking that down would have allowed for the banning of books. I know you regressives are all for that, but not me. Any corporation buying advertisements for politicians must not be international, and they must declare what they are buying. It's actually more strict than friggin' lobbyist rules. You regressives must be quite mentally weak, to not be able to withstand a political ad or a sales pitch. What is the problem here?

    ReplyDelete
  11. vomamike you are a lot smarter then bruce and joec. Your thoughts are very well put. I was starting to think all liberals were idiots. Thanks for changing my mind on that much. But I have to say that John and Chris made their points and disroyed you points. I'd like to know what you think about their counter points.Thanx ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  12. How can you get more freedom from bigger government? Doesn't big government in and of itself reduce our freedoms not give us more freedom?

    ReplyDelete
  13. My god, Chris, have you sent anything by UPS lately? It costs a fortune. Imagine if UPS handled letters and bills, the cost to companies using the USPS would skyrocket. There's a reason UPS and FedEx don't want to deliver everyday mail, it costs too much.

The USPS is a great bargain, delivering a letter for $.44. If the USPS could charge $18 to deliver an envelope, they'd be doing great.

It's not the unions that are the problem, Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You're out of your mind Bruce. Seriously, get some professional help. Why do you think there is a UPS or FedEx FAILk? If the USPS had such great rates, why would any company spring up to compete with them, and how would that company compete and thrive against them? My company doesn't send packages by USPS, but they sure would if their pricing was competitive. That is why I believe my thesis, that you are indeed a mental case and require some serious treatment, is the correct diagnosis. Mentally, you are not functioning in reality.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I notice that FAILk never blames a socialist/communist idea for being the problem.

Bruce, can you name anything that is wrong with Cuba's political system? Just checking to see how much you agree with a Communist system.

    ReplyDelete
  16. John, have you done a price comparison? I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Answer my questions first FAILk, and then I would be happy to answer yours. But you never answer any of my questions. Which just shows how ignorant you are about everything you say.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Comrade FAILk, I should have said.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Comrade FAILk never has to do price comparisons. He just takes the first price he gets to his representative and bitches about what he has to pay, and then pushes for a law allowing the federal government to come down hard on anyone who tries to make a profit. Very communist of you and the regressives Comrade FAILk.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bruce try answering Chris' questions. Stop diverting the questions and the post. You make a dumb statement and then run. UPS and FedX are eating the USPS's lunch. Now answer Chris' questions if you can.

    ReplyDelete
  21. FedEx and UPS have succeeded by siphoning off the most profitable part of package delivery, overnight service and packages.

The theory is akin to health insurance companies only wanting to insure healthy people.

I've actually compared the USPS to FedEx and UPS and I have never found a case where FedEx or UPS was less expensive than the USPS. NEVER! There may be a perceived reliability gap, but I've never used the USPS for overnight and had it not arrive on time.

E-mail is not a threat to FedEx or UPS because the vast majority of their business is delivering packages and overnight delivery.

If we were to lose the Post Office, I'd venture to say every business in America would be screaming because their cost of marketing would skyrocket, as would every politician's budget for sending mail pieces.

The Post Office is one of the best bargains ever.

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL ... did you notice how in the red the Post Office is FAILk?!?! Sure it's a bargain, if they are a loser! What in the HELL are you TALKING about Comrade?!?? ROFLMAO

Only the government can pour taxpayer money into a losing business, prop it up with more taxpayer money even though it's losing hand over fist, and then have regressives proclaim it is the ideal business model and a "great deal"!!! ROFLMAO

Bravo FAILk, Bravo. You have REALLY outdone yourself this time!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  23. Bruce, you are really, really, really dumb. Really. Seriously. Stupid. Just dumb, dumb, dumb.

You set regressivism back 50 years with your thoughts Bruce. I think I can speak for the other regressives on here, like vomamike and Joey, when I say STFU, you are making them look very stupid. And I know they aren't, just like I know you are. But really, guilt by association here. You have to be embarrassing them to no end.

Still doesn't mean the shipping costs less!! ROFLMAO

You really are a communist, aren't you FAILk?!?! BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  27. I like UPS. Go Teamsters...lol...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Al, of course I don't endorse communism. That is a stupid ass question.

There are some elements of government that are for the common good, roads, schools, the post office are just a few examples. The "free market" doesn't work for everything.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I see Bruce can't answer my questions. Great job though of diverting. I knew you would stay away from answering them. Do you think that if the USPS disapeared that someone wouldn't come to pick up the slack? Maybe the USPS needs a little efficiency of the private sector. Kind of like what happened with Waste Managment. A private company did a much better job then the government.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bruce you want the free market to be perfect every time. But you back a system that has never been more effective then the free market. When has the governement ever done better then the privet sector?

    ReplyDelete
  31. PS I'm not against unions. I'm just against the unions that kill the businesses that they are employed by. That is when we the people have had to bail out these companies and states.

    ReplyDelete
  32. There ya go Joey! LOL

    Good points by Chris too.

Comrade Bruce still can't point out anything wrong with communism. Just saying.

Comrade Bruce, none of that stuff is (or should be) the domain of the federal government. It should be state or local-level. They can handle that stuff. Feds should concentrate on keeping us safe and resolving disputes between states, things like that. It was never supposed to be like USSR, but I know that's how you like it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Whoops, meant to add Joey that I like UPS as well. FedEx has given me problems. A lot more problems than UPS ever has.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well Chris, the lies they are spinning now is that EVERYTHING they work on is a "jobs" bill. That way they can try to create an atmosphere of panic and try to push everything through. They are claiming that every bill will "create OR save" jobs. What a bunch of scammers. Especially since everything the pass is a job-destroyer. And not just jobs now, but jobs for generations. Sickens me what they are doing. November can't get here soon enough.

Chuck Schumer (D-NY): Nuclear option is “a Constitutional crisis”

Chris Dodd (D-CT): “We need to sit down and work with each other. Tyranny of the majority”

Joe Biden (D-DE) “I pray God that when the Democrats take power we don’t make the same naked power grab”

Chuck Schumer (D-NY): “They will break the rules, change the rules, misread the Constitution so that they will get their way.”

  42. Not a problem Mark, I like your blogs. Brian Pannebecker has a good one as well, I forgot to mention his: http://www.bpannebecker.blogspot.com/

But he has been working on Cox's Governor Campaign, so I'm not sure how often he gets his updated.

Mine are more of a lark. I wish there were some good liberal blogs to add. Joey was working on his for a while, but he's busy and it wasn't too much of a political one, more existential I guess, wouldn't you agree Joey? Not taking any shots or anything, it's just not really a political one and it's been a while since I checked it, but it really hadn't changed in a while.

Bruce's is a joke. He doesn't allow dissenting opinions, it's literally an echo chamber of sycophants. Joey, before you respond that this one is too, I just want to point out that Chris allows and encourages different points of view. The fact that the majority of voices on this blog are conservative only has to do, I think, with the fact that Bruce Fealk embarrasses any other liberal that might want to post on here. And after all, what do you expect for a blog with "from the Right" in the title but more of a conservative slant?

So anyway, most of the liberal blogs out there are just an ugly torrent of hate and rage, including FAILk's. With all that vitriol, you would hardly know they were the party in power in both the legislature and the executive branches!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree John in all the great blogs. I used to follow Bruces blog but he didn't post some of my counter posts so now i don't even want to play over there. Liberals do have thin skin. Well it looks like the Democrats are going for the kamakaze move. I think the Democrats have put the nail in their political coffin using the "nuclear option" they so opposed when Republicans were in power. But we all know the Democrats will spend the next couple decades just blaming the Republicans for cleaning up the Progressive mess the Democrat made. Obama,Pelosi and Reid killed the Democrat party. If they can recover from this then it's because the Republicans screwed up.

  53. The United States Postal Service is making bleak predictions about its financial future, leaving many observers to wonder if a taxpayer bailout is in the offing since Congress sets many of the rules the agency operates under.

Postmaster General John Potter released estimates yesterday predicting that the U.S. Postal Service could suffer $238 billion in losses in the next decade if Congress, regulators, and unions do not give the agency more flexibility in setting delivery schedules, price increases, and labor costs. Potter also predicts that letter carriers will deliver just 150 billion pieces of mail in 2020, a drop of about 26 billion pieces from 2009.

Tad DeHaven, a budget analyst at the Cato Institute, says if the USPS moves to five-day services and starts to delay mail delivery service, there will be a need to introduce competition.

"The government has a monopoly on first-class mail services," he points out. "And so I'm thinking that a lot of folks out there who enjoy their Saturday mail delivery -- or might want Sunday mail delivery -- might be willing to pay a price to a private firm to get such services. But they can't do that because the government doesn't allow any competition."

DeHaven says changes in telecommunication (email, online bill pay, and texting) have rendered the need for Postal Service first-class mail delivery less necessary. And at the same time, notes the analyst, the USPS is "weighed down" by unionized labor compensation and benefits, which make up 80 percent of the agency's cost structure.

There's NO sense in making MORE laws if the laws already on the books aren't followed!! It's like making laws against gun ownership, when the only ones that register are the law-abiding citizens whose freedoms are infringed upon.

Regulations only hurt the small businesses, which the large businesses use to hammer them into nothing. Large businesses buy laws and regulations that favor THEM and hurt the little guy. Get with the program idiot.
