Charitable Donations vs. Taxes: Open Thread

Here’s a short video illustrating the coercion behind government-mandated charity.
If the left-wing didn't have the government doing their bidding by taking from tax payers most of their organizations would go under and the left know it. Liberals on average give almost half as much as conservatives. And since there are less then 20% of the population that is liberal they would never become a political force without tax payer money and big brother. What do you think?

  1. i am wondering about your assertions...

George Will, that bastion of Union leftwing ideology in an op-ed even dismisses those figures...

"-- Although liberal families' incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227)."

always nice to start an open debate with fallacies....but at least i'm here to correct ya.

  2. If many conservatives are liberals who have been mugged by reality, Brooks, a registered independent, is, as a reviewer of his book said, a social scientist who has been mugged by data. They include these findings:

-- Although liberal families' incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).

-- Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.

-- Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.

-- Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.

-- In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.

-- People who reject the idea that "government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality" give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition.

Brooks demonstrates a correlation between charitable behavior and "the values that lie beneath" liberal and conservative labels. Two influences on charitable behavior are religion and attitudes about the proper role of government.

The single biggest predictor of someone's altruism, Willett says, is religion. It increasingly correlates with conservative political affiliations because, as Brooks' book says, "the percentage of self-described Democrats who say they have 'no religion' has more than quadrupled since the early 1970s." America is largely divided between religious givers and secular nongivers, and the former are disproportionately conservative. One demonstration that religion is a strong determinant of charitable behavior is that the least charitable cohort is a relatively small one -- secular conservatives.

  3. See Joe when you factor in all the variables you get a clearer picture. Did you factor in the difference in incomes as to have a % of incoming giving? Did you factor in all the other giving conservatives do? Thanks for trying to correct me but once again you've come up WRONG. lol

  4. Liberals do beleive Taxes are Donations and there lies the problem!

Not happy with lame duck session especially the republicans who should have waited for 112th session to begin OUR recovery. Most issues taken by lame duck session had sat for months with NO action and for some reason republicans could not wait for new term. Citizens sent message in November that spending must be addressed. No Funding NO Spending and alot of republicans forgot and went back to old habits in Congress. Not a good way for any politcan to stay a Representitive of the people.

  5. Al,, The MSM, the RINO's in the senate are working in concert overtime to set-up the narrative that this is now (and has been) a bi-partisan congress BEFORE the new one starts.

The GOP establishment wants to hold power and knows that by setting this up they can denounce the Tea Party. Will it work? Not with me,
I want a real party of NO!
    I want COMPLETE GRIDLOCK!
    I want REPEAL!
    I want a government SHUTDOWN!
    I want AUSTERITY!

Remember their names, they are the first on the chopping block in 2012 after Obama! Remind them everyday going forward!

  6. CCP The "Cant we all get along" mantra will not work with Citizens. Citizens do NOT want the Same as before. Republicans seem to think turning into moderate Demoncrats is the solution. They tried that in the past and it was not.

Tea Party is NOT going to allow either Party to take this Nation by the Throat and try to Strangle it. Economy/Job creation is being Strangled by Big Government that cannot survive in Good Economy and High Employment!

Politicans will be judge by wheather their for OUR Nation as Forefathers envisioned or NOT. The Unsubstainable Deficit MUST be Confronted and dealt with. Tea Party will be watching.

Those politicans Strangling OUR Nation by SPENDING without FUNDING will be DEALT with in 2012. Politicans either SHIT or get off the POT! That is OUR message to you!

    On that happy note

    Merry Christmas to All!
