President Barack Obama on Friday forcefully endorsed building a mosque near ground zero, saying the country's founding principles demanded no less."As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation."That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."Obama made the comments at an annual dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Republicans were quick to pounce on the president's remarks."President Obama is wrong," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. "It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero. While the Muslim community has the right to build the mosque they are abusing that right by needlessly offending so many people who have suffered so much."The White House had not previously taken a stand on the mosque, which would be part of a $100 million Islamic center to be built two blocks from where nearly 3,000 people perished when hijacked jetliners slammed into the World Trade Center2001. Press secretary Robert Gibbs had insisted it was a local matter. towers on Sept. 11,

ReplyDeleteDid anyone expect different from Hussein?
ReplyDeleteReally, from the little mans own mouth on moslem call to prayer:
"One Of The Prettiest Sounds On Earth"
THIS POS AND HIS ENTIRE FAMILY HAVE TO GO!
The President, is once again out of touch with not only nearly 70% of Americans, but out of touch with the debate.
ReplyDeleteAnd Gibbs 'It's a local matter'... the nation was attack that day...
The Constitution be damned - right guys? It may be insensitive to plan a Mosque near ground zero, but I thought we were bigger then that. So much for the moral high ground!!
ReplyDeleteMike how is zoning issues against the Constitution? What about the Branch Dividian and the rights of Mormons and Muslims to marry many wives? Can a religion do animal sacrifice in America legally in NYC? Can a strip club open up anywhere it damn well wants? If you want to talk about the Constitution then why are we the people paying for this Imam to travel around the middle east aprotisising? Where is you outrage Mike? This isn't about the Constitution so don't even try to make it. We have zonong rules for a reason. This mosque can go down the street and nio one is trampling on their religious freedoms. Give me a break Mike!
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday When Asked Again In Florida Regarding Same Issue He Says I Wont Comment On Wisdom Of Building Mosque At The Chosen Site.
ReplyDeleteNobama Has Once Again Shown Lack Of Leadership As President But Does Show He Still Possesses Community Orgainzer Skills!
Chris, there are no zoning restrictions against the building of the community center. They have been cleared to build.
ReplyDeleteIt would be unconscionable for the President to do anything but reaffirm the legality of building there after they have been given the go ahead by whatever planning authority is in place.
Besides other have beat the zoning board based on constitutional issues before.
Vona, thats the problem with the right. Try to keep a wal mart out of your area and they scream the constitution, the constitution, but let a foreign rteligion want to build a cultureal center, mosque in Tennesse, California, Wisconsin, New York and they scream the will of the people and fuck the constition.
Moral High Ground On This Issue Is NOT To Build It And Moral High Ground Is Something Progressives Are Unfamiliar With.
ReplyDeleteThis Will Be A Victory For Everbody But The Citizens And Those Situations Are Begininng To Add Up.
Joe You Think Union Workers From Area Will Assist In Mosques Construction Or Will It Be Out Sourced To Middle East?
